Good for LethbridgeThe announcement that a $10 million plant to manufacture mobile phone systems will be built in the city of Lethbridge next spring would be welcome news at any time but particularly so now as unemployment reaches higher ana higher levels in Southern Alberta. Both Lethbridge city council and its economic development office can be congratulated for the coup considering the fact that with the general slowdown in business expansion, there was no doubt strong competition and other concessions offered from many communities for the NovAtel Communications plant. -This is the second time the city has offered its industrial land at a reduced price in orderto attract a large industry. Theuse of city land as a carrot to produce jobs has proven to be acceptable to residents whenthe alternative is unused industrial land.■• The announcement brinesinto question at least two of the Issues in the present civic election, namely the accusation of a lackadasical attitude on the present council toward economic development, and the city’s loss of competitive position because of the Alberta Electrical Energy Marketing Agency. The first point has been successfully refuted by theannouncement. Its timing, ofcourse, must have been entirely coincidental as the other candidates are sure to point out, and only goes to show the advantage incumbents have during election campaigns. The second point is equally as clear. NovAtel must be aware of the increased power costs it will be faced with in this city from the marketing agency in the years ahead and it is still coming into the city. That suggests the effects of the agency will not be as dire as they have been forecast.
