MET INSTANT DEATH.Fred Carpenter Killed While HaulingWood Into the City of Keokuk.Keokuk, Oct. 4.—A fatal accident occurred Thursday at the foot of the Anschutz hill, in which a young and stalwart farmer met almost instant death. The victim was Fred Carpenter, the 22-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles L. Carpenter, who reside upon a farm near Sandusky. Young Carpenter was on his way to Keokuk with a load of wood and was accompanied by a boy named Herbert Collins. A short distance behind him was a buggy containing his father, who is a prominent farmer of the county, and his sister, Mrs. Elmer Smith, who also lives near Sandusky. The accident appears to have been a most unusual one. As the foot of the Anschutz hill was reached the wood on the wagon began to slip and Carpenter stopped the horses and proceeded to straighten it so that none of the load would be lost in ascending the hill. While thus engaged the horses suddenly started and Carpenter sprang between them in the rear with the intention of grabbing the lines and checking them up. In some inexplicable manner he slipped and fell directly in front of the front wheels and as the animals continued to move one of the wheels passed over his body. Death was instantaneous.WFATHFD ivmbheaatlciirftfirt\di
