Glencoe Baptist will have 100th anniversary eventBy DON BOLDENTimes-NewsSunday, Oct. 17 will be a big day in the history of Glencoe Baptist Church. The church will mark its 100th anniversary that day, joining a growing list of Alamance County churches which have been in existence for a cen-turyThere will be special services that day at the church, beginning at 10 a.m. and concluding with a lunch in the fellowship hall at 12:30 p.m. There will be no Sunday School that day. Instead, there will be a worship service at 10 a.m. with special music and a message by Dan Brock, a member of First Baptist Church of Burlington.Then there will be a second worship service at 11 a.m., again with special music and a message by Dr. Howard Silver, director of missions forthe Mt. Zion Baptist Association. That service will include greetings from President Bill Clinton and Gov. Jim Hunt. A special plaque will be presented at that time to commemorate the day in the history of the church.The church was featured here in Alamance Magazine in May of 1991 as the church history of the month.Glencoe Baptist was organized on Oct. 19, 1893 under the leadership of the Rev. John C. Hocutt, the pastor of Burlington’s First Baptist Church. The members met in the Old Mill House which hac been a tobacco factory and a grist mill on the bank of the Haw River.The first pastor was called in December of 1893, the Rev. God has honored the faithfulness of His followers and the Christian ministry shown by the pastor who sought only glory for the Master as he saw hundreds follow the calling. Due to the growth in member ship and activity outreach, the Hancock Chapel was constructed in 1949 on property purchased on West Elm Street in Graham from Richard and Alice Coe. This building served as a sanctuary and for Sunday School classrooms until the membership continued its growth and the present church structure was erected and dedicated May 6, 1952, to the glory of God. When this building was completed, the chapel was used for the growing Sunday School programs, prayer meeting and special services.Today, the beautifully designed structure draws attention from passersby who admire the architectural structure and at the same time tend to appreciate the Christian teachings that are given inside its four walls.CiIa / Ttmnc.MpWQ
