Page EightTHE INDIANAPCWashington topbut Tigers/Satans, Titans have potentialWashington's Continentals, defending Butler sectional champs, figure to be the teamto beat in city high school basketball competition this season, but at least three other teams - Tech, Shortridge and Crispus Attucks - plan to give the opposition a run for top ranking.The Continentals, runners-up to Shortridge in the regionalslast season, will bring back four letterman, including All - A-merican George McGinnis, too-pen their season Friday night against Hammond on the homemm*. ■ :Coach Bill Green, taking over for Jerry Oliver who is now freshman coach at Indiana University, will have the 6-foot-7 McGinnis, a 28-point per game performer last season, starting in the center slot.McGinnis was named to Parade's Magazine All-America first team last season. McGinnis, who weighs 220, was an all-state end on the school's football team.Also taking to the court for the rugged Continentals will be Steven Downing, a 6-9 forward who averaged 12 points and 15 rebounds on last year's 24-3club. /The other two returnees are James Arnold, 6-3, and Harvey Galbreath, a 5-9 junior.Other team members will include Kenneth Carter, 6-2; Kenneth Parks, 6-1; Louis Day,(of football fame), 5-10; Wayne Pack, 5-11, all seniors; and A-lan Glaze, 5-8; Abner Nibbs, 6-2; Steve Standfield. 6-2; Tom Skaggs, 5-10; James Riley, 5-11; and James Trotter, 6-3, all sophomores. f;?Coach George Theofanis'Shortridge Satans willmissOs-car Evans ( an all - state forward), Dave Holt and Leonard Taylor but plans to mold a fine team out of three letter-men and an array of seniors and juniors. .’ A'Shortridge, runner-up to Gary Roosevelt for the state title last year, will have little Greg Allen (5-7) back and he'llbe the floor leader. Considered by many sriters as the best guard in the state, Allen a-veraged 15 points a game last season for the 25-5 Satans.He’ll get experienced help from Clarence Crain, 6-1 senior, and Carl Lile, a 5-7 junior.Most of the height will come from inexperienced men such as Steve Gurnell, 6-4; Robert Wilson, 6-4; George Tandy, 6-3; Dave Speckman, 6-2; and Robert E. Wilson, 6-1.Also aiding the Satan effortthis season will be Ken Randle, 5-10; Henry Robinson, 6-7; Jerry Willis, 5-11; Leon Graves 6-0; Ed Mathews, 6-0 and Bill Offett, 5-5.The Satans will open Wed^ nesday night (Nov. 27) against Anderson and return home for a big one Saturday night against pre-season favorite Washington at Hinkle Fieldhouse.Crispus Attucks will be looking to improve on its 11-11 record last season when they open against Northwest Friday night at home and pay a visit to Cathedral the following evening. Coach Don Thomas, beginninghis second year at the helm, will work with six returninglettermen. Leading the packwill be 6-4 Isaac Robinson, who averaged 12 points and 11GREG ALLENrebounds last season.Behind him comes Sherman Lester, 6-3; Robert Whitley, 6-3, both at forward; and Forrest Clemmons, 5-11; Curtis Johnson, 5-11; and Wendell Taylor, 5-11, all guards.Breaking into the roster for the first time will be Herman Oliver, 6-4; Jesse Mayfield, 6-4; Marvin Brewster, 6-3; Steven Easley, 6-1; Clarence Hatcher, 6-1; John Sherrell, 6-0; Kenneth Mason, 5 - 10; Garry Maxey, 5-10 and Alfonso Landers, 518.Coach Thomas is optimistic about his team. Once again theTigers will have to play mostof the top teams in the state,such as defending state champGary Roosevelt, LaFayette, East Chicago Washington, FprtGEORGE MCGINNISWayne Central and Muncie Southside, to say nothing of city foes Shortridge, Washington and Tech.Meanwhile, Tech, under new coach Carl Meditch, will be without the services of all-state guard Jim Price, but he has four men returning and plenty of height to go with them.The big man in the Titan's lineup will be 6-4 Roland Richardson, who gave a lot of opponents trouble last year.
