PRE-SEASON '65-'66 GARFIELD VARSITYa ssLowell Touchton, Paul Siebenmorgen, Tom Gillis. Rick Weddle, and Max James, manager.TALENT SUMMARYSTEVE HATHAWAYSteve, a 5-9 senior letterman, is up from the undefeated reserves of last year. With the B-team, he was the top scorer, and hit on 56 percent of his field goal attempts. Steve has a lot of desire, and doesn’t like to quit.RICK WEDDLELittle is known about the playing ability of this six-foot senior forward. Rick was out last season with an injury, but should be one of the better players on the team. Rick is also a tennis player, and has a lot of spirit.TERRY MURAWSKITerry has the most varsity experience of any man on the squad, even though he was out half the season with an injury suffered in football. Terry must be tough for the Purple Eagles to be tough.BOB CLEGHORNAnother senior with limited varsity action is 5-9 guard Bob. He is one of the better small players on the squad. His fast hands on defense enabled him to snare a number of balls on the B-team last year.TOM GILLISTom was the best offensive rebounder on the B-team last year, and the second highest scorer. Standing 6-212 he may get the starting role at one forward, but he will have to get tough, and hard.HOWARD WILLIAMSStanding 5-9, and weighing 144, Howard is the best boy on the squad, pound for pound at the present time. Known as “Little •O’,” he hit 82 percent from the charity stripe last year with the B-team. Howard learned his basketball through the Boys’ Club.MIKE TURNERThe only junior with a letter is 5-10% Mike. He is a tough ballplayer to keep from playing. Mike is an outstanding competitor in baseball, and wants to play with the San Francisco Giants.LOWELL TOUCHTONThe second largest man on the varsity is 6-2 forward-center Lowell. He was the top defensive rebounder on last year's B-team. Coach McDonald says, If Garfield is to have a good season, we must rely on Lowell coming through as one of the best big men in thecity.”PAUL SIEBENMORGENStanding 6-5, center Paul Siebenmorgen is the tallest man on the Purple Eagles squad. He tied Touchton for the tout number of rebounds on the B-tcam last year. He is a hard worker, but must improve on his moves around thebasket.DAN FISHERAn outstanding dashman in track, 5-10% Dan is the fastest man on the squad. A junior, this is his first year out for basketball. He is pushing some of the more experienced boys on the squad.LARRY GALLAGHERLarry, a 6-1 junior forward, will see a lot of reserve ball early this season to gain experience. A good outside shooter, he is also a star pitcher for the baseball team at Garfield.DELFORD COFIELDA 6-1 junior forward, Del is a promising newcomer, as he did not play last year. His early seaso j play will be with the B-team. With determination, he could be pushing the other boys on the squad.
