6 Medina County Gazette — Medina. O., Thurs., Nov. 29, ’73BY KEN CANFIELD Gazette Sports EditorWESTFIELD TWP.-Cloverleaf basketball coach Dick Anderson is taking a wait-and-see attitude about the Colts’ chances this season.“I don’t know how it will go,Anderson admits. “We’ll do what we do. and if we do the things we want to. we’ll be alright,” he theorized. The Colts have four lettermen back from a 6-13 team, the worst in Anderson’s four-year coaching career at Cloverleaf. We have a very competitive group of boys who want to win quite badly,” he said. I think they had enough losing last year. We're a year older and a year better,” Anderson said. But he’s not sure how much better the Colts are, even after their 49-47 win over Rittman. “We're still unbeaten until someone beats us, though, he added.Three of the Cloverleaf starters last week were lettermen. Seniors Dick Bittner, a 6-2 forward: Steve Markley, a 6-2 center, and Bill Haldiman, a 5-6 guard, were teamed up with senior Jim Martin, a 5-9 guard, a junior Jim Hewit, a 6-0 forward.Senior letterman Ken Clark, a 6-0 guard, will also see a good deal of time this season. Senior Don Pinkerton, a 6-0 forward, and junior Dave Griffin, a 6-3 forward, are the other top varsity prospects. “We always hope someone on the JV squad will play his way into some varsity playing time, too, .Anderson1973-74 CLOVERLEAF COLTS — These Colt cagers will try for their second straight win Friday night at home against Ashland. Standing, from left, are Rick McGuire, trainer, Jim Martin, Tom McDermott, Ken Clark, Randy Allen, said. The Cloverleaf coach was impressed with his team's rebounding and defense in the opener which he termed “strong.” Anderson figures his team’s man-to-man.Wwiv'v'idefense is the team's biggest strength. “We’ve got some good aggressive defensive players,” he commented. Markley, Hewit and Bittner are all rugged rebounders to complement that■v.Wtight defense. The first game we had too many turnovers,” he moaned. He considered 15 turnovers too many. “That has to be under 10 for us to win,” he emphasized. We must cut down on turnovers, that’s probably the key to our season rightnow.”One thing that didn’t worry Anderson is that the Colts got most of their pointsfrom the front line. ‘ ‘Anybody that starts for us this year will be capable of scoring 20 points,” said Anderson. “We’ve got as good of balanced shooters thai we’ve hadhere,” he claimed.Anderson pointed out that the Indians pressured the guards and that Cloverleaf didn’t get its fast break going in the second half, which held the guards' scoring down.Cloverleaf’s shooting from the field was 42 percent, but Anderson would like improvement there, tool “I’d like to see that about 45 percent,” he said.“Our foul shooting is better than it was the other night,” Anderson continued. “I was disappointed in that lastweek.” The Colts hooped seven of 12 foul shots.West Holmes is Anderson’s pick to win the Chippewa Conference again this season. After that he doesn’t know who will be tough. “Until we start playing games I won’t have any idea,” he remarked.Anderson should get an idea of how tough his team will shape up Friday when Ashland invades. The Arrows have won a share of the Cardinal Conference crown for the last four seasons and are the favorite this year, too.“It should be a real strong test this early in the season,” he said. That Ashland game will be the Colts’ final tuneup before entering league play.
