Bethel AME Church, Prospect, will celebrate its 81st anniversary SundayThe congregation of Bethel African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church at 180 New Street in the Prospect section of Johnstown will celebrate its 81st anniversary Sunday, November 29. Minister Arthur Hardison and Evangelist Sabrina Hardison will be guest speakers, and music will be provide by the Hardison singers. A fellowship dinner will be served at 2 p.m. in the church dining hall.The Bethel Church was organized in 1917 by a group of believers assembling under the leadership of the Rev. Joseph H. Flagg. The first meeting was held at the Rev. Flagg’s home in the Rosedale section of Johnstown. After the churchwas formed, services were held in a building owned by Bethlehem Steel Company..The following year the Rev. L.A. Moore organized a branch in Conemaugh to meet the spiritual needs of the widely scattered people. The Rev. Morrow Williams united the two branches in 1928. The Rev. B. A. Beaclam headed the church at a location on Church and Chapin Streets in Old Conemaugh Borough. In 1932, the Rev. Julian Jenkins relocated the church to Woodvale.The Rev. J.A. Jarvis was the pastor who led the church through a period of distress and moved it to Bedford Street where it remained from 1940 to1961. The church mortgage was burned under the leadership of the Rev. W. T. Lee. Pastors after Lee included the Rev. Hughey, the Rev. A. T. Casson, and the Rev. Sheffield Wilcox. It was during the Rev. Wilcox’s tenure that the city purchased the Bedford Street church property to build Route 56. Four lots were purchased on New Street, the present location, and ground was broken in 1959.
