Mrs. Schmerse toobserve 95th birthday“As long as one is that old, I try to take it cheerfully. ” saysMrs. William F. Schmerse, who will observe her 95th birthdayanniversary on New Year’s Day. “Your attitude toward lifemakes a difference,” she says.Mrs. Schmerse remains not only cheerful, but amazingly active for her years; living alone in her home at 2110 15thSt.; and doing her own housework.Despite having a large house to keep up, she is presentlymaking a fan-patterned quilt, inwool, “to keep busy.”“I had a little garden this summer, with all kinds of vegetables, and canned 21 pints of tomatoes from the garden,” she reports. All this, despite problems with the rabbits which “ate the centers out of the cabbage.”Mrs. Schmerse prepares well-balanced meals for herself and bakes bread and also takes bread and other baked items to a neighbor whose wife diedabout a year ago.She accompanies her son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Chester Schmerse, Monroe, to church at the United Methodist Church, each Sunday, having taught Sunday School there for many years. They also take her downtown so that she can carry out her own business.Her eyesight remains good and she uses a cane only when walking out-of-doors, since shesuffers from arthritis.The daughter of Ernest andMathilda Braun Hahn, Mrs. Schmerse is the former MarieMRS.SCHMERSEHahn. She was born Jan. 1, 1879, in Blooming Grove, Dane County. She married WilliamSchmerse Dec. 20, 1904, in Monroe. He died June 16, 1971, at the age of 94. The couple farmed in the Monroe and Juda areas until 1942 when they retired to Monroe.She has the son, Chester, Monroe, and twin daughters who were children of a relative and were raised by the Sch-merses since the age of four. They are Mrs. John (Luela) Kopp. Monroe, and Miss Lulu Snyder, Freeport. She also has six grandchildren and 12 greatgrandchildren.Mrs. Schmerse plans to spend her birthday at the home of a granddaughter, Mrs. Gaylord Johnsrud, Monticello. Each year she is a guest in the home of a relative and enjoys watching the Rose Bowl Parades. She spent Christmas day with relatives at the home of a grandson, LaVerne Schmerse.Mrs. Schmerse donated two quilts which she made to Christmas Stocking this year and baked cookies for the Christmas Stocking project
