HighlightBack-to-back concertos by Handel and Poulenc highlighted a Saturday evening organ program by ThomasRichner at the RLDS Auditorium.The soloist was joined by Franklyn Weddle and members of the Independence Symphony Orchestra in what approached a chamber musicatmosphere, is such is possible in a room seating more than five thousand.Not that many attended, but those who did enjoyed music played with competence and cooperation by musicians who clearly know what they are doing.Weddle is something of an expert on Handel, while j Richner is master of the bar-j oque organ sound. That is a pretty good team and was a winner in the Handel F. Ma jor Concerto for organ strings, two oboes, bassoon and harpsichord. The ensem ble answered the solo instru ment with style and such precision that an equal partnership was maintained for the benefit of the graceful music involved.The second concerto, in G Minor for organ, strings andtimpani by Francis Poulenc, did not achieve the sameelan. The score called for bigger things from the organ, which could not be matched by the small orchestra sowell suited for the Handel. It was rather like listening to one track of a stereo recording and being frustrated by the lack of total balance.The intention of the participants was clear and musically appropriate. The net effect was to leave one glad that the effort had been made, but sorry that realization escaped us this time.The faults and virtues of the performance were so evenly distributed throughout the evening that one can generalize about the entire affair. It was a solid recital, but nowhere did it touch the excitement of greatness.
