Medina, O., Fri., Nov. 24, ’72 - Medina Comity Gaxette 11BY CHIP STEINERBRUNSWICK - Bob Krosky, Brunswick High School’s varsity basketball coach is confident. “We’re definitely going to be the most improved basketball team in the area,” he said last Tuesday afternoon.Krosky backs up his confidence with some hard facts. For starters, the Blue Devils lost only two players through graduation last year which leaves an experienced core for the coach to work with.• Six of the Blue Devils earned letters last year in the sport, and all of them, according to Krosky are vastly improved players over the previous season.Krosky has nine players he believes are starters, giving die Blue Devils good depth. For the height department, the biggest man on the tarn is Joe Schaffner, 6’5” senior center. Behind him is Bill yssen, 6’4”, also a senior at the center ition. The Blue Devils have two forwards, ick Shaw and Mark Sheridan, both eniors, breaking the six-foot mark by an ch.At guard, are junior Marke Gibson nd senior Gary Clement. Clement ds an even six feet while Gibson is’10”.In addition to those six, all of whom are lettermen, Krosky has three players up from last years’ JV squad who will also be seeing action. Art Ziegler, a senior, stands 6’4” and will be playing forward. Behind him are two guards, junior Dean Kutz (5’11”) and senior Ken Quinn (5’10”).Those nine players compose the core of the Blue Devil team, but they still have Jim Checkelsky, a junior forward who stands 6’4”, and two more guards, Jeff Shores (5’8”) a senior and junior John Wills (5’9”).Offensively, the Blue Devils will go with some set patterns, but Korsky has enough confidence in this years' squad to allow some freelancing — “Going on your own when the opportunity presents itself,” as Krosky puts it.Burns wick will be using both a zone and a man-to-man defense, depending on the team being played and the specific circumstances. Krosky points out that the team will be switching back and forth between the two defenses throughout most games. The offense will not be built around any one player. It is a five man offense according to Krosky, and all of them are capable of making baskets.Krosky notes the plusses: great attitude on the part of the players, goodhustle and good depth. But he is also aware of the weak spots.“We have good size but we aren’t as physical as we should be,” the coach commented, adding “I think one of the determinants of the season is how aggressive, how physical, we play inside.”Aggressiveness is going to be a big factor in the outcome of the season for the Brunswick roundballers. It will take a certain amount of pressure to control the boards and the ball, and to win a tea must control the game. But the biggest problem the Blue Devils face has nothing to do with ability. It concerns tradition and again Krosky isn’t blind to the fact. “Really, the whole problem is these kids have never won. If they can just get over this stigma, we’ll have a good team.” The basketball mentor added that “they want to win but it’s just a question of whether they know how.”These have been some indications in scrimmages that the Blue Devils can be competitive and even favored in some ball games. In two scrimmages Brunswick has played even ball with Padua and Lorain Catholic. The latter school outscored the Devils by 50 points lastyear in a scrimmage.Krosky has set one goal for the year, to have a winning season. Asked whether he thought this was possible the coach replied, “Definitely.”1972-73 BRUNSWICK BLUE DEVILS — Here is the 1972-73 version of the Brunswick Blue Devil basketball team.
