The church is named after theGreenfield family-forerunners of the Horton family on Natchez street. For 42 years the church was pastored by Rev. Watt Mixon (now deceased). The present pastor is Rev. Nolan Clayton who was Rev. Mixon’s assistant. According to Mrs. Crawford, Centennial chairman, the celebration \ ices will climax Sunday, Nov. 30, at o'clock. Rev. Nov. 26 7:30 p.m. The church has invited mbers of the Cate family to attend services. Land for the church was a ted by the family in the mid-1800’s. v hurch was not organized, however ! 1875. Throughout the years Cate i.iily has assisted the church in manvf\\ways. Many other friends have been invited. The churcft has renovated it’s pool and hopes to purchase a church bus as a result of their hundred year celebrated according to Bro. Ed Wells who serves as co-c(iairman of the year long celebration.i*Church History Greenfield Baptist Church 1870 On January 10; 1870 a deed was signed by landowner and founder, Charles E. Cate, his wife Mertie A. Cate and Winston Scott, Tower Lee, William Green, Levi Thompson and Ben Noble, “trusted, solicited and appointed by the (colored) Baptist Church. . .’’ this document confirmed the beginning of Greenfield Baptist Church.The Cate family who owned and developed the land where the town is today were concerned that religion should be a basic requirement of thelittle settlement. There had been Sunday School services held in the Cate home on Ciprte Square for several years. These services were the beginning of the first \church, Grace Memorial Episcopal Church, in the town.* -a1 . . . * * * * 1The property selected by the Baptist urch was used as a cemetery but a ireh building was never built there.Later, however, a building was erected on another \piece of Cate property not far from the present church. This first church building served a faithful congregation fqr many years.\Among the men who signed the deed for the Baptikt Church was Levi Thompson, a leader for many years of this church and a beloved and respected employee of the Cate family all of his life.His influence and Christianservice was felt bv all who knew him.*
