George Young Bear, graduate of Haskell and a leader among the Mesquakie Indians in Tama county, tells C. M. Richards of Toledo, that a “beautiful event took place last Sunday at the home of Ah-Sa-Me-Sah when relatives of Wa-Ka-Yah, a Mesquakie who died last month, gave an adoption feast in accordance with the ancient Mesquakie tribal custom in loving memory of him whose spirit has left his loving relatives. White Breast was chosen to take the place of the deceased in the hearts of the relatives. Many attended, games and pastimes took place and everyone enjoyed the day.”
