The telephone contact for themReach Out West End seeks volunteers for counseling troubled personsgives them an “out.Other more serious calls come through that line, however, from kids with family, problems to people loaded on drugs and potential suicides Reach Out s volunteer staff is ready to cope with those calls Many times a counseling date will be arranged at Reach Out for a confused, anxious caller It's a way to make contact and offer immediate intervention, explains Jim Lakehomer, a program director for Reach Out West End Often the caller is nervous, scared we re going to call the police — we try to gain trust, but if we feel there is imminent danger we do take action such as in the case of a suicideattempt, Lakehomer says.Mike Schumake is director of the no-heat line and he is under heat now over .. need for new volunteer trainees to handlethose calls.Because the line is available to the public 24 hours a day. more volunteer staff members are needed.Sunday Reach Out will begin a new training program for persons interested in helping other people via the no-heat line To arouse interest, erase apathy, Schumake and other staff members are speaking at local high schools and junior colleges urging persons to do what many try not to do — “get involved ’Training sessions involve foursessions each Sunday at 5 p m at the Reach Out Walk In Center 404 W D St., Ontario New volunteers are trained bv staff members in what Reach Out s services are in crisis calls. They learn to handle such calls and eventuallymget to “roll play through simulated calls From there volunteers come into on phone service” training, becoming staff members themselves First they listen to callers and later when they become at ease they answer theWcalls listened to by trainers.Completion of training is the beginning of service A new no heat line staffer will be assigned hours to be available for callsVolunteers for the phone service should be at least 15 years old.Persons who have the time to get involved'' in the no heat line community service may call Reach Out at 984-4016 or stop by the Walk-In Center in OntarioOften initial contact through the no-heat line will bring an individual in a personal crisis into the more immense services Reach Out offers There is drug counseling, marriage and family counseling, pre-marital counseling, pregnancy and abortion counseling — all free to the community In addition, Reach Out utilizes medical, psychological, psychiatric andlegal consultants as well as an extensive referral svstemReach Out s walk-in center is a community based crisis center with a target population including persons between 14 and 24 year old Funds to finance the program come through a grant from San Bernardino County Mental Health under the Lanterman-Petris and Short-Doyle Act.
