Pioneer is 84 r'ANOTHER of the pioneers of Manitowoc county is to be honored with a birthday celebration. She is Mrs. Mary Paulus, who has lived here since coming- to this country from Germany in 1856, and her years number 84 today. The birthday celebration will take place this evening at the home of her son, Herman Paulus, 628 North Seventh street.Born in Germany Nov. 20. 1847, Mrs. Paulus'came toAmerica with her parents, Mr., -ancl-Mrs._Gustav Moldenhauer* in 1856, arriving in Manitowoc when •-she was eight years old The family' included five children—Ernst, Mary, Mathilda. Theresa and Louis.Immediately after coming here the father purchased 80 acres of land iii the region now making up Section 11, town of Liberty. In- this wijdnerness there was sufficient clearing sfflly a two*voom log house and a log barn.This crude log house served the family until about 1873, when a more modern frame house was built to replace it.Mary Moldenhauer was married to Carl Paulus in 1869 and with him moved to Manito-MRS. MARY PAULUS woe to operate a general store. Five’ children were born to the couple: Mrs. William Esch, deceased; Mrs. Herman Gra-bo, California; Walter Paulus, California; Mrs. Clara Bittel St. Louis; and Herman Paulus, Manitowoc.
