Lancers Dunk Beverly HillsThe regular Sunny Hills lineup played for just five minutes Friday afternoon. It was unfortunate for Beverly Hills that it played at all.The Lancers’ Greg Anderson scored five goals in five minutes of the third period to key an eight-point Sunny Hills explosion as Sunny Hills defeated Beverly Hills. 13-6. in a second round game of the CIF water polo playoffs.Coach Jim Sprague started only four of the six swimmers who have led his team to 19 wins in 21 games this season, including two victories over defending division champion Newport Harbor. But the two players who weren't in the pool for the opening sprint were his two leading scorers — Anderson and Mike Spicer.“A couple of first-stringers missed practice.” Sprague said. ‘‘We started the kids who showed up for practice. That's the rule we live by and we decided to stick to it.Sunny Hills clung to a 5-2 lead after a fairly even first half, but with Anderson and Spicer in the water at the start of the third quarter, the game took on an entirely different complexion.Anderson scored twice within the first minute and Tom Hill added another goal less than 90 seconds later and the top-seeded Lancers were up, 8-2, and threatening to make it a runaway.Jim Chao scored for Beverly Hills to halt Sunny Hills' momentum for a brief instant, but Anderson came back with two more and the match was over with more than eight minutes left on the clock.WATER POLO‘‘1 don’t want to tell someone who's been first string all week in practice that he won’t be first string and start. Sprague said. “They’re the one's that busted the rules.Sprague said that a slight cold and a term paper caused the boys’ absence and that he wouldn’t hesitate to bench the pair under the same circumstances in the CIF finals.Jeff Lonner had a fine game in goal for Sunny Hills, stopping six shots in three periods as the Lancers moved to 19-2 on the year.— By KEVIN BAXTERServite High coach Nino Predesik predicted a close game and he wasn't disappointed Friday during the 2-A CIF water polo playoff at the Friar pool.Servite and visiting La Quinta played a tough, even match with the Friars pulling out an 11-8 victory in the final minutes.“We knew both.teams were pretty evenly matched,” said Predesik. “They were rated fourth in the final ratings while we were seventh.Evenly matched was the correct term as both got off virtually the same number of shots (28 for Servile. 27 for La Quinta).Servite never trailed in the game, taking a 2-6 lead in the first period. La Quinta tied it up at the end of the first period before Servite took the lead for good with two goals early in the second period. But the Friars were never able to get comfortable as the Aztecs constantly threatened, cutting the lead to one. five times in the second half. The final time came with 2:07 to play when Jeff Gilbert put in a corner shot to make the score 9-8.But Servite came right back with Dave Debs scoring from the side for a 10-8 lead.La Quinta came back down and had a shot blocked, then stole the ball. Servite got called for an ejection moments later, giving La Quinta another chance to close within one. But two shots were blocked, with Friar goalie Steve White deflecting the second attempt all the way to the other end of the pool. By the time the Aztecs got the ball back into play, the 30-second penalty ejection was over. With only 18 seconds to play, La Quinta pulled it’s goalie in an effort to knot the game. The strategy backfired as Debs scored on the open net with only seconds left for the final score. The two teams finished with almost identical shots on goal, 28-27 for Servite. White was credited with eight saves while Aztec goalie John Schnedier rejected nine shots.— By Dave OstermanPLEASE NOTIf Cancsllo-tions Or Corrections Of Classified Advertising CAN NOT Be Made Between The Tlrne The Ad is Ordered And The Initial Publication.
