“BUDDY” SADDLERHAS BEEN GRANTEDINDEFINITE RELEASELITTLE ROCK, Ark., Nov. 15.— (/P)—Gov. Homer M. Adkins’ office disclosed that Louis Buddy” Saddler. 35, one-t'rr.e associate of the late public enemy No. 1 Charlie Chapman and under long prison terms in Arkansas and Texas, has been furloughed indefinitely.The furlough order, announced last night, revealed that Texas prison authorities had requested such action be taken.Saddler, with Chapman and Hugh Lindsey, escaped in 1936 from Cummins State Prison Farm, where Saddler was serving 28 years for a Clark County, Ark., bank robbery. The fugitives were recaptured in Texas and convicted on charges of robbery with firearms for the holdup of the First National Bank of Atlanta, Tex., in which two bystanders were wounded.Saddler was sentenced to 25 years by the Texas court and Arkansas authorities issued a detainer for his custody when he completed the Texas term.Governor Adkins, in his furlough order which was dated Oct. 26, said the clemency had been earnestly tecommended by Texas prison authorities” and concurred in by Supt T. C. Cogbill of Cummins farm.The governor said the order will make it possible for the Texas pardon and parole board to grant Saddler conditional release so he can enter the army or take employment.Chaplains C. E. Garrett and Hugh Finnegan of the Texas penitentiary at Huntsville had instituted pleas in Saddler’s behalf last July 8, describing him as one of the best rehabilitative prospects in the prison and indicated he * would be given consideration by the Texas board should the Arkansas detainer bo lifted.Chapman and Lindsey received sentences of 60 and 50 years, respectively, for their participation in the Texas bank holdup. Chapman escaped in 1937 and in 1942 was shot and killed by federalagents near Philadelphia. Miss.
