Louis Saddler Is Furloughed From Arkansas Prison. LITTLE ROCK, Ark. — UP)—Gov. Homer M. Adkins’ office disclosed that Louis “Buddy” Saddler, 35, one-time associate of the late Public Enemy No. 1 Charlie ChapmanIand under long prison terms in Arkansas and Texas, has been furloughed indefinitely.The furlough order, announced Monday night, revealed that Texas prison authorities had requested such action be taken.Saddler, with Chapman and Hugh Lindsey, escaped in 1936 from Cummins State Prison Farm, where Saddler was serving 28 years for a Clark County, Ark., bank robbery. The fugitives were recaptured in Texas and convicted on charges of robbery with firearms for the holdup cl' the First National Bank of Atlanta, Texas, in which two bystanders were wounded.Texas Board Makes Appeal Saddler was sentenced to 25 years by the Texas court and Arkansas authorities issued a detainer for his custody when he completed the Texas term.Governor Adkins, in his furlough order which was dater Oct.' 26, said the clemency had been “earnestly recommended by Texas prison authorities” and concurred in by Supt. T. C. Cogbill of Cummins Farm.The governor said the order will make it possible for the Texas pardon and parole board to grant Saddler conditional release so he can enter the Army or take employment.
