The children of Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Shafer, with relatiyes and many friends, particularly the oldest citizens,assembled at their residence on Tuesday, November 3, that being the fiftieth anniversary of their marriage, and gave them a dinner which was a surprise to Mr. Shafer,it being partly known to Mrs. Shafer, that all necessaries could be made. The day was pleasant and the company numbered about eighty, including many ofthe oldest citizens, some who were present at the marriage. A short sketch of the history of Mr. and Mrs. Shaffer was given by Dr. W. F. Reiley. They were married in Franklin counly, Indiana. Jacob Shafer was born in Pennsylvania, 1S12, and moved to Sardinia, 1814, Mrs. Shafer was born in Indiana, IS 14. They joined the Methodist Church fifty-three years ago. They have by hard labor and economy accumulated sufficient property to enable their children to have good homes and retaining enough to support them in their declining years. They have been active supporters of their church and ministry. Rev. Robison, of the Methodist Church, in behalf of the children, presented Mr. Shafer with a gold-headed oane, and Mrs. Shafer gold spectacles. The most interestingIpoint of the exercises was, when the minister said to Mr. Shafer that he had learned that he had been staggering and his gait was not very steady,therefore he should have a cane. This was a shock to Mr. Shafer. Next was an address by Rev. Wetherwax, of the Presbyterian Church on the ties of humanity, in relation to marriage and the duties and influence of Christian lives. Large quantities of provision had been prepared, and all felt that the day had been spent In a pleasant way in recognizing the aged couple. Rev. White closed the entertainment by prayer.
