MOVILLE, IOWA, THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 12, 1936Celebrated GoldenJllWedding Anniversary ||Nearly a hundred persons attended the open house Tuesday celebrating the fiftieth wedding anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. S. K. France. The couple was honored at a dinner at noon prepared by the daughtcrs-in-law and received many gifts and flowers.Out of town guests at the dinner were Mr. and Mrs, Van Duzer of Ames; Mr. and Mrs. Frank Gates, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Curley, Dr. and Mrs. E.' J. Lichtey and Mr. and Mrs; E. H. Derby, all of Kingsley, Mr: and Mrs. Ed Sickles and Mrs. Ruth Sickles of Sioux Rapids.Dinner guests from Moville were Mrs. Adah Wilkins, Ms. Nellie Anderson and W. H. Thomley.On October 16, 1878, when Sylvester I*.. France r?de up the Bacon Hollow hill with the late Joe Wood on their way to Rock Branch, he saw for the first time a country which impressed him as being “Godforsaken.” Prairie fircj v/cre raging and hardly a sign of habitation could be seen. ti. Then he returnsd to’ Ohio and came back in March and rented land.In 1882 he bought 80 acres in section 31, Rutland town.diip, and also the Mose Baumgardner homestead in Arlington towivshiD. He* built on the Baumgardner place and lived there until 1920, w.'usn ne and Mrs. France came to Moville.His first year on his own j ':ce wa* rot very profitable.
