6 - THE SHOAL LAKE STAR, SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 4, 2000Wowryk Family holds reunion over summer,The descendants of the late Annie and Roy Wowryk gathered at Shoal Lake on July 7-9The descendants of the late Annie and Roy Wowryk met together in Shoal Lake to celebrate a memorable reunion this summer.One hundred plus from across Canada and United States came to share as well as to meet the younger generation of the large family over the dates of July 7-9.Roy Wowryk, the son of Nicholas and Magdalene (Koszalka) Wowryk, was born in Ternavka, Austria in Western Ukraine in 1888. He arrived in the Olha district in 1912 where he was employed in a lumber mill. Roy met Annie in 1913. Annie was born in Olha in 1900 to Paul and Mary (Filas) Bile-ski. They were married in 1914 at St. Michaels Church, Olha and as a result, 21 children were born (two died as infants) and raised in Shoal Lake.Roy and Annie farmed, first starting in Kelloe and continued farming in the Shoal Lake area until his untimely demise in 1951 at 63 years of age. Annie subsequently sold the farm and moved into Shoal Lake where she lived until her death in 1960 at the age of 60. As a product of their love there are 11 living siblings, to date, 52 grandchildren. 50great grandchildren and 11 great, great grandchildren.The weekend almost never came to be, as Shoal Lake and surrounding area endured a storm Thursday, July 6, with tremendous winds and rains, snapping trees and flooding basements requiring a great amount of clean up. The park was damaged with fallen trees and brush that required clearing to continue with the plans. Luckily, the family was able to meet at Lakeview Park on Friday evening where the renewal of kinsmen started. The horseshoe pit was flooded however, a makeshift pit was made and a good old horseshoe tournament, wiener roast, and bonfire enhanced the evening.A beautiful weather weekend followed and Saturday morning was kicked off by a nine-hole Texas Scramble, with an optional nine for fun. For those that did not golf, crafts and games were a delight for the children as well as the adults at the home of Peter and Hilaria Wowryk. Lunch was served for the kids and for anyone else passing through. Following that, a pool party was held at Donnaand John Gill’s at Strathclair.A banquet was attended by all at the Buffalo Plains Inn Saturday evening. Mickey Paraschuk on the violin and Nester Tutkaluk on the keyboard greeted everyone with their lively Ukrainian music. An interesting program was prepared and emceed by Sonia Wawryk and Jean Paraschuk. There was a sit down dinner and a period of mingling where families enjoyed looking at the family albums provided by each family. Also a six foot familytree was constructed and on display.Prizes were handed to the winners of the horseshoe tournament and Texas Scramble, and all the children were presented with mementos as well as all the adults. Family members submitted their favorite recipes and a cookbook, The Wowryk Favorites, was compiled. Sonia Wawryk, Marie Wowryk, and Hilaria Wowryk, “The Wowryk Trio of Oakburn”, presented entertainment in the form of a poem written about how the three girls became Wowryks.In remembrance of Nick and Mary Nychuk’s 60th wedding anniversary, Nester and Peter Wowryk presented a strawberry plant to them. The social evening began with an anniversary waltz, honoring the Nychuks.Sunday morning started with brunch at the Buffalo Plains Inn. The family attended liturgy at St. Helen’s Roman Catholic Church followed by a graveside service in remembrance of the late Roy and Annie Wowryk and all the deceased familymembers.Farewell was at the home of Sophie and Ron Zenchy-shyn where cake and refreshments were served as families said their last good-byes andThe Strathclair 4-H clubs are sponsors of the fall campaign of Child and Family Services (CFS) of Western Manitoba, a non-profit organization, sensitive to the farm crisis in the region. Programs under the CFS banner to strengthen families are paid for by community donations. These programs include child-care skills and the promotion of positive family living. Members will be canvassing the community after school on Tuesday, Nov. 7.Willard and Molly Moffett travelled to Stony Plain, Alta, to visit Margaret Nichols at the Diamond Jubilee Manor, who says hello to everyone at Strathclair.Frank and Mildred Ger-rard celebrated their 65th anniversary not 60th as reported.The Strathclair Museumreturned to their respectivehomes.A large part of this reunion’s success was due to the efforts of Phyllis Tutkaluk and family members.StrathclairCommittee feels they had an active and rewarding year with approximately 250 people visiting the museum. Many of the visitors were from out of province, Australia, United States and British Isles. .Helga Gerrard, secretary-treasurer, stated four windows in the residence portion of the museum are to be replaced due to deterioration of their wood. As well, the eav-estrough has been updated, and air circulation within the building is being improved through the use of a series offans.Once again the Strathclair Museum will supply the electricity for the Christmas display lighting, west of the museum.
