The EagJes now are 4-4 for the season and must win one of their last two starts for a .500 season. Joplin winds up its schedule at home Friday night, November 15. against powerful Springfield Central.“After we lost that first second-half fumble, our kids seemed to have a mental letdown,” Willingham explained this morning. “That’s never happened to us before this season, and I hope it doesn't happen again.”Willingham said the Eagles came out of the Parkview skirmish with only minor bruises, noting that center Jim Gilbert suffered a severe bruise on the calf of a leg.Willingham plans to stress defense of the option play in workouts this week and added that “we’re going to attempt to get our tackles playing stiffer football.” Willingham said that junior Mike Russell did a fine job of filling in for another junior tackle, Kenny McKnight, against Parkview. McKnight became sick early in the contest and sat out most of the game.“We plan to work against Fayetteville’s 7-diamond defense also this week,” Willingham added. “Fayetteville plays typical Arkansas football—good defense and good offense. They’re real adept at scramble blocking and they hit hard on defense. Fayetteville is real quick, but they don’t have the breakaway threat.”Joplin high school’s ”B“ football squad travels to Springfield Central Tuesday night tor a 7:30 o’clock tussle with the BulJpups.On the local high school basketball scene, Jim Wyatt’s McAuiey Warriors will try to regroup their iorees for a noncon-lerence game at Bronaugh Tuesday night. The Warriors also are scucduied to open their home schedule Friday night in a Little Eight Conference game with Alba.The Warriors, outbattled all the way on the boards, were thumped by Goodman Friday night in a conference test, 82-43.Meanwhile, practice continues for Joplin high school’s round-ball prospects in the high school gymnasium. Coach Russ Kaminsky has several ”B” team candidates working out with his varsity hopefuls. The Eagles will not launch their cage season until Friday, November 29, at home against Pittsburg.Doug Landrith, Joplin Junior college basketball coach, held a tryout session this afternoon for his prospects. Landrith probably will take a long look at many of the candidates before trimming his roster.Only three lettermen. including one starter, return from last year’s club.
