The writer, H. R. Jones, was a purser on the S. S. Marquette, which used to steam up the Assiniboin© river, and one of his ports of call was Brandcn. Many old-timers of this city will be interested in the letter, which is as follows:To the Mayor, City of Brandon, Man.Dear Sir—-I was residing In Win nipeg from 1881 to 1884, and during ( part of that time, up to the time the ('. P. R. was completed and the riv^r traffic ruined, I was engaged as purser on the boats plying between Winnipeg and Fort Ellice, I recollect Brandon when it had not so much as a tent on it, and I had the honor of being purser on the steamer that took the first citizens first to Grand Valley and a little later to Brandon. That change has a short history to it, but no doubt you are awmre of how’ it came about. 1 have resided now in Australia for 33 years, but I often think of those speculative days I in Manitoba in '81 and of those genialj men who founded your city, and ofI w hose acquaintance I am proud. My | reason for writing you now is that I have come across the newspaper report of that trip of the S. S. Marquette and the original address presented to the officers on that occasion, and I thought it might please the residents of your city to have them, for after 38 years they might be looked upon almost as historical, or as relics. I am therefore inclosing a copy of the said newspaper clipping, with all the names of those 29 pioneers, and upon hearing from you 1 will have great pleasure in sending the originals and also others referring to river trips. On one occasion we took the steamer as far as Fort Pelly under some very peculiar circumstances,which I shall be pleased to relate inmy next. I would be very interested to learn that some of those old identities are still living and in your city,and if you write me I would much like to have a photo or two of the old place.With my respects, believe me, yours faithfully,4H. She was delayed some time through a line parting , j when she w’as working up the rapids, j Fort Ellice was reached on Saturday evening, and on Sunday afternoon she5)Lstarted down the river, passing the “City of Winnipeg” at Oak River Mission and the “Manitoba” and “Alpha a little above the Portage. The wind t drove her against one of the piers of the Assiniboine bridge,, slightly damaging some of the guards. Her freight cargo going up was very heavy and the passenger list was about one hundred each way.
