TheyA commeiidation for uls ef-‘ forts in behalf of the West Virginia Centennial program was received this week by County Chairman Martin Fahey from William Wallace Barron, governor of West Virginia.Gov. Barron commented “I was particularly impressed with four aspects of your celebration. First, the history book of the county published for the Centennial year was the most detailed and outstanding one I have ever seen for any county in the state. Second, the Centennial Home and Industry Fair was the most impressive in the state, particularly the displays of modern products of local industries as compared to the ids-plays of products used 100 years ago.“Third, the Fourth of July parade was the most spectacular of all I have participated in this year. Fourth, the varied Centennial programs throughout Hancock Countv certainlv werebrary. Harvey Lilly was appointed Chairman of the Speakers Bureau and six speakers were selected to stimulate interest in the Centennial by speaking on the subject to all organizations, clubs and schools in the county.The committee decided that it would sponsor diversified types of programs in order to attract the interest and attendance by all segments of the population of the county.The first project was to have prepared a detailed history of the county in hard cover form together with pictures of the early county personalities, buildings and developments. Jack Welch, a life-long resident of the county and a graduate of West Virginia University, was commissioned to write a detailed history of the country. This comprehensive 202 page history from prehistoric days to the present was written, copyrighted and sold during the Centennial vear. Approximate-#contained exhibits of county industries and businesses as wellas a comprehensive antique exhibit which included historic a 1 documents such as wills and deeds, clothing, firearms, cooking utensils, old coins and photographs.March 31 — Hancock County Sports Banquet held at Weirton Community Center in honor of all the former renowned athletes in the county. Each person honored was given a certificate signed by the Governor. 250 people attended.March 31 - April 5 — The same Centennial antique exhibit, was displayed at the New Cumberland Swaney Library with 450 people in attendance.May 11 — The Weirtoni a n Club sponsored a Centenni a 1 Banguet at the Weirton Community Center with United States Senator Jennings Randolph and Major General Andrew Lolli as the main speakers. 600 peopleJuly 21 — “Best of Weirton Centennial Show” given at Oakland Hospital for hospitalized war veterans.August 3 — A iJorthern All Star Centennial Football game was held at the Weirton Stadium with 4,000 people in attendance. The participants included four representatives who were seniors in each high school in the northern seven counties of West Virginia.August 15 - 19 — The Centennial Show Boat was in Weirton. 1767 people attended.August 20 and 22 — The Cenof the West Virginia Amate u rTournament.' July 15 - Civil War Train, “The General”, exhibited inarea. Colonel James J. Andrews of Hancock C6unty led the groups of Northern soldiers who stole the train from the Confed erate Army. 8,000 people viewed the train.tennial Show Boat was in Chester. 954 people attended.August 25 - 31 — A Weirton Centennial tennis tourname n t was held at the Weirton Community Center.August 26d^September 2 —The first County Fair ever held in Hancock County was held tn New Cumberland and was identified as the Hancock County Centennial Fair. 12,000 peop 1 e were in attendance.August 28 — Pittsburgh Pops Orchestra has Centennial S.how at Madonna High School. 557 people attended.August 31 - September 7 —The Hancock Centennial art exhibit was held in the Swaney Library in New Cumberland. The nine most prominent artists in West Virginia each submitted two of their works.September 11 -17 — The Centennial Civil War Exhibit, sponsored by the United States Army, was displayed at the Weirton Community Center. 1,000 people viewed the exhibit.September 15 - 22 — The Centennial Art Exhibit was shown at the Weirton Community Center and the Chester City Building.September 21 — Centennial golf tournaments began at the Williams Country Club, Pleasant Valley Country Club and the Woodview Country Cluh.October 10 — North American Junior Lightweight Championship Boxing Show at the Weirton Community Center.December 12 — Centennial Basketball Game between West Virginia University Freshmen Basketball Team and College of Steubenville Freshmen at Weir ton Community Center.In addition to the above program, the Weirton Community Center had a Centennial Smor-August and September. Ea r 1 y West Virginia menus were included as well as popular current menus. Several individual ciubs and organizations in the county also had individual programs devoted to the West Virginia Centennial and all schools in the county had at least one Centennial program. In the programs listed by dates above, 89,578 people attended the events where actual crowd estimates were made. In some events, no estimates of the number of people attending were r ceived.
