50th Anniversary Event of McGregor Bros, CoensOne of Oldest Firms in CrestonOne of Creston’s oldest business firms this month is celebrating its 50th anniversary—the McGregorBrothers and Coens furniture and undertaking business.In fact its linage actually dates back to the early 1870s, which is real pioneer time for the city of Creston. The Mackemer Brothers started it then, later becoming the Mickle, Havens and company.Then in 1899 the three McGregor brothers, C. B.. J. F. and Lawrence L. McGregor took it over. Lawrence, a little over a year later transferred his interests to the furniture and undertaking business in Gravity. Ia., where he continued until 1916. In that year he returned to Creston and with Clarence Coen bought into the McGregor Brothers business. A year later Harry Coen joined the firm and it became known as McGregor Brothers and Coens, a name it now continues.Ov«r 50 YearsThe 50th anniversary occasion, a notable achievement for a business, is heightened by the fact that one of the original members is still active in the business—L. L. McGregor, or Larry McGregor as his many friends know him.His senior partner, Harry Coen, has been an active member of the firm for the past 33 years, which is quite a little record in itself.
