George Hilligoss was a nativeof Germany and. before coming io America married Lizzie Clavel, with whom he came, to* this country a short time before the devolution. He was tailor by trade, but later in life'followed farming. In 1781 he .left Pennsylvania where he had settled, and migrated to Kentucky and settled in Fleming county, where vfter long and useful lives, they both died;His son John . Hilligoss was jorn in Pennsylvania in 1775 and went with his parents to K«i-Sucky. Raised bn a farm he followed farming all his life. .He was married soon after he reach-jd twenty one, to Miss Nancy Sehockley, a native of Maryland. She was of English descent and was the daughter of William 3chockley, a native of Maryalnd, \nd for fifteen years a sailor, but ji later years went to and settled in Kentucky.To this union were born eight :ons and two daughters viz: William S., George B., Eli, Mary, Tohn, James S., Elias T., Sanford S., Hiilda Ann and Johnathan 3. The family moved to Brown ’ounty, Ohio, in 1825 and in 1834 .removed to Rush county, Ind.Elias Truitt Hilligoss was the seventh child of John Hilligoss md was bom in Fleming county, Kentucky, March 2, 1319 and was raised on a farm. He received- his education in tlie pio-•leer Schools of Ohio, and when ie began life for himself, had no capital but an eighty of -Congress Land. But he was energetic and industrious and soon became .a prosperous farmer. On Sept. 27, 1838, he was married to Miss Nancy Thomas, who was bom Nov. 3, 1817, in Lewis county, Ky., a daughter of David and Mary (McQueen) Thomas.
