Ulm celebrates 50th year in priesthoodSpecial to the LeaderRev. John Francis Ulm of Houston, a native of Orange and son of the late Louis and Elsie Ulm. celebrated a Mass of Thanksgiving at St. Mary's Catholic Church on Mav24. JThis event was in observance of his 50th anniversary to the priest hood.The co-celebrants for the Mass were Rev. Benedict Zientek and Rev. Joseph Daleo. Father Daleo led Father Ulm and Father Zientek in the renewal of their priestly vows.Ulm attended St. Mary’s grade school, and graduated from St. Mary’s High School in 1951 He soon entered St. Mary’s Seminary in La Porte and graduated from St. Mary’s Seminary in Houston in 1958.He was ordained to the priesthood at St. Mary's Cathedral in Galveston by Bishop Wendelin Nold oh May 24. 1958.Ulm’s first assignment was at St. Cecelia’s Church in Houston. His next assignments were Sacred Heart Cathedral and St. Francis Cabrini in Houston.From there he went to Our Lady of Guadalupe in Pasadena and Guardian Angel Church in Baytown.Volunteering as a missionary to Guatemala, he spent more than five years at Our Lady of Monserrat where he helped build thechurch, Jesus Obrero. IJlm's missionary work in Guatemala left a lasting impression on him.“I loved being in Guatemala because the people were so human and real there.” he said. “They appreciated everything you did - they were just so special.”From Guatemala, he went to St. Mary's Church in Texas City. He later received his Masters of Artin Theology at theUniversity of St. Thomas in Houston on May 15, 1980.In May. 1984, he was appointed a chaplain inthe U.S. Army, and his firststop was in Ft. Stewart, Ga.He had orders to go toGermany - a special privilege to him due to his ancestral roots - but anywhere he was stationed, Ulm said he was honored • to have the opportunity to train with soldiers. Also being present for their sacramental needs wasvery fulfilling.His next assignment was to St. James The Apostle Church in Spring. Texas. In 1999, he was sent to St. Maximilian Kolbe Church in Houston, where he resides today.Ulm credits his longevity and perseverance in the priestly ministry to his roots.“I think it goes all the way back to my family, and my school, St. Mary's in Orange,” he said. “I think I had a lot of values instilled in me during the early part of my life the first 15 to 16 years. That is what it all started with; the desire to serve the people and the church. Itis not something that cameto me later in life. It was something I had in me since I was young.”The love of God was the root and foundation of the family in which Father John Francis Ulm grew in faith and stature.Ulm
