Wednesday, may 3ist,1961Blackstock Couple Hold At Home on Their Golden AnniversaryMr. and Mrs. J. A. Johnston of Blackstock were “at home”! to their many friends, rela-l tives and neighbors on the occasion of their Golden Wedding on Monday, May 22nd, 1961, in the beautifully decorated Christian Educational1 Boom of the United Church.Among the numerous messages received were congratulations from the Honorable Dr. Herbert Bruce (a distant relative), Prime Minister John Diefenbaker, Premier Leslie; j Frost, Provincial Seer e t a r y John Yaremko, Percy Vivian, M.P., and telegrams from Mr. and Mrs. Roy Ferguson, West! Bank, B.C. (brother of the' bride), Dr. and Mrs. Allan j McIntosh (niece of the bride), Kelowna, B.C., and Mrs. Howard Black of New Mexico. Mrs. Black was owner of the court in Truth or Consequences, New Mexico, where the Johnstons spent two months in 1954.The co-hosts and hostesses were Mr. and Mrs. Roy Avery (nee Ferga Johnston), Tilbury,Mr. and Mrs. Keith Johnston, Belleville, Mr. and Mrs. Neil Johnston, Boissevain, Manitoba.The couple’s oldest grandchild, Donna Marie Avery, was in charge of the golden guest book.Pouring tea during the af ternoon and evening were Mrs. Charles Smith, Mrs. George Johnston, Mrs. Tennyson Sa-mells, Mrs. Russel Mountjoy, Mrs. Charles Venning, Mrs. Cecil Hill. Nieces served the delicious luncheon.The bride’s table was centered with a three-tier anniversary cake beautifully decorated with golden leaves, beads and bells and topped with tiny daffodils. On each side of the cake was a lovely bouquet of yellow and white daffodils and ’mums.During the afternoon Mr. Earl Dorrell, acting as chairman, spoke of the fine qualities of character that made this couple so well thought o:! during the years. Messrs. Harry Johnston, Streetsville, andIvan Mountjoy made the presentation of a swivel rocker, occasional chair, two bouquet!! of 50 yellow ’mums, and a sum of money, to which both bride and groom made fitting replies. Several others made congratulatory speeches. Earlier in the day the Johnston clan had given her a beautiful necklace and earrings and him a wallet.On Sunday, following a family dinner at the home of Mr. Earl Dorrell, the family presented their parents with wrist watches, and Earl Dorrell gave them two gold cups and saucers. They also received a number of individual gifts during the weekend.Four of their seven grandchildren were present, Donna Marie and Carlyle Avery, Linda and Pearl Johnston.Mr. George Johnston, the groomsman of 50 years ago, was one of several who spoke words of congratulations and good wishes. Their bridesmaid was the late Annie Ferguson Dorrell.Among friends present were Mr. and Mrs. John Rowlapd, Millbrook (the groom’s sister) who celebrated their golden wedding April 12, 1961; Mr. and Mrs. Milliard Fallis, Baden, (the bride’s only surviving sister); and numei-ous nieces and nephews from Ottawa, Belleville, Peterborough, Millbrook, Bethany, Yelver-ton, Orono, Streetsville, Toronto, Bronte, St. Catherines, Galt, and surrounding territory.
