L Cadets Hold Their Annual Military Massit id toTwo notable events took place at the Sacred Heart church yesterday forenoon which attracted capacity congregations from all corners of the city and caused hearty congratulations to be showered upon the pastor, Rev. Denis A. Sullivan. O. M. I.The first was the military mass of the O. M. I. Cadets—the third fpr the Cadets of that parish—which was celebrated at 9 o’clock and which attracted a huge congregation.The second was the solemn high mass In honor of the silver Jubilee of Rev. William J. Kirwin, O. M. I., native son of the Sacred Heart parish who celebrated the completion of 25 years of service to God and who was the object of a laudatory sermon by the pastor.The church was decorated beautifully for both occasions, a profusion of flowers and flags being so arranged as to bring out the red, white and blue colors In recognition of the military mass and the natural charm of the church aisles was enhanced with the military colors of the khaki-clad little soldiers.The military mass was celebrated at 9 o'clock and was followed by a Cadet breakfast in the camp* grounds in the rear of the church. The Jubilee ma^is was sung at 11 o’clock. The Cadet sextet, the sanctuary choir under the direction of Miss Veronica Barr, organist, arranged a beautiful program of music that was appropriate to the occasion and all together it was a day that was quite unuBual and brilliant in the life of the Sacred Heart parish.The Jubilarlan, Rev. Fr. Kirwin. 0. M. I., was the celebrant of the solemn high mass at 11 o'clock. The deacon was Rev. Bernard Fletcher. O. M. I., and the sub-deacon. Rev. Francis X. McGanri, 0. M. I., another native son of the parish.In the sanctuary wae the pastor, Rev. Fr. Sullivan, Rev. Owen P. Me Quaid, O. M. I., of the Immaculate Conception; Rev. William F. Mahan, O. M. I., and Rev. Charles F. Barry. O. M. I. The attendants were gowned in red cassocks, while the Cadet sextet made a pretty picture in purple cassocks and Eton collars.The church choir, directed by Miss Barr, organist, sang appropriate music, being supported by the sanctuary choir of 80 voices, opening with the hymn, Angels Round the Altar Tend,” followed by Anlma Christe.At the offertory George Kirwin. brother of the Jubilarlan. sang Jura-vit and Mrs. William Sheehan and Mrs. Stephen C. Garrity also sang solos at the mass. At the end of the mass the Cadet sextet sangThere Is Joy in Heaven and the sanctuary choir followed with the cardinal's hymn, God Bless Ua All Before We Go from This, Thy Holy Place.’ As the congregation left the church the choir sang Unfold Ye Portals.”In the special sermon devoted en tlrely to the splendid achievement of Rev. Fr. Kirwin, the pastofl, Rev. Fr. Sullivan, took for his tetft a passage from St. Paul's second letter to Timothy:Carefully study to present thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not be ashamed, rightly handling the word of truth.’He applied that text directly to Fr. Kirwin, mentioning that during his, career as a priest for the past 25 years he has been a good disciple of Christ, a good priest and a zealous missionary for God. He described Fr. Kirwin’s work as a professor at the University of Ottawa, a pioneer in Nebraska, a pastor In Buffalo and zealous missionary In the field.He laid particular stress upon Fr. Kirwin’s benefit to the community during his 25 years in the priesthood and quoted from the writings of St. Augustine that the bringing of- one soul from sin to peace is greater than the creation of the world. For the 25 years that thp jubilarlan has been a priest. Fr. Sullivan said, he has been a great benefactor to the community and an instrument in giving glory to God.A factor mentioned In his laudatory speech by Fr. Sullivan was the presence of Fr. Kirwin’s mother in the congregation that saw him celebrate his 25th anniversary In the I priesthood.
