Last Friday, May 23, the house of Adam Srlihitlerhack, two miles smith west of town, was all animation and I bo scene ofmany joyous greetings and social pleasores, the occasion hemic a grand surprise on Adam's father. Inch? Hid. as lie js familiarly known, who had arrived at his seventy ninth birthday.Friend-', and licit!hhors, itmnlierinir about sixty, had gathered. in response (o an invitation from his son Adam, and were in the height of glee arid, merriment in anticipation of the old gentleman's coming, when about 12 o'clock he arrived, aeemnpanied hy John Morrow, who. in pa.s-.ing Uncle Gideon's old homestead. liRfl. with thftf honest fare of his, prevailed on theohl gentleman tonceompany him to Adam's about. a quarter mile dis Hint, for the purpose of seeing the new carpel loom of which he had heard so much hut not yet seen. He was com pletely surprised and after a hearty handshaking all around amid many kind and c heering words, the parly sat down to aJ most bountiful repast, each apparently * vicing with the others in the agreeable task of trying to lighten the tables’ bur dens. Full justice being done to the inner man, the next in order was the 1giving of presents, the chief present being 1a beautiful gold-headed cane with theinitials and dales of birth and presenla- *tion. The presentation, on behalf of the friends, was made hy Mr. Joseph Weaver * in a few well selected and appropriate re- j marks, Uncle (Tut. was very much ntfcct-ed, but with much clTorlmadc a reply full *of pathos which went to the hearts of all 1 present.The* remainder of the afternoon was whiled away too soon in the way of social ^ chat, music and the recounting of old ' reminiscences. The playing on the tld- 1 die hy Uncle Gideon was quite u feature of the occasion and was highly enjoyed 1 hy all.
