MEMORIAL DAY IN MASSILLONBrook Harless, vice president of the Serving Area M itary Center, addressees the crowd at Duncan Plaza on Monday.By Samantha IckesIndependent staff writerMASSILLONwhen Brook Harless, vice president ofthe Serving Area Military Center, thinks of Memorial Day, she thinks of two things: freedom and heroes. For Harless, Memorial Day is more than just a day off of work and an opportunity to host a barbecue in the backyard with friends and family.“People need to take a moment to think of how these freedoms came about,” Harless said. “Think about the people that paid the ultimate sacrifice for us to be here today to enjoy the weather, to enjoy the barbecue, to enjoy our families.”Communities across Stark County recognized Memorial Day with parades and services. Though community members honored Memorial Day in different ways by attending a service or hosting a family gathering, the message remained the same. Memorial Day is a time to remember fallen veterans and thank them for their sacrifice.Massillon’s Memorial Day Parade stepped off from Lincoln Way East and Eighth Street NE atSEE SACRIFICE, A5ONLINE■ See video and a photo gallery from Massillon’s Memoral Day parade at lndeOnline.com.INDEPENDENT KEVIN WHITLOCK■ Robert Huber and his son, Liam, 11, of Perry Township wave flags as the parade moves by them on Tremont Avenue in Massillon on Monday.
