Pastor Will Celebrate 40th Anniversary of OrdinationSHERMAN OAKS — The Rev. James J. Nevin, pastor of St. Francis rieSales Church, will observe the 40th anniversary of his ordination to the priesthood Sunday, at a solemn mass of thanksgiving con-celebrated by Rev. Nevin, the Rev. Henry Busch, S.V.D., and the Rev. Gerhardt Schreiber, S.V.D., at 11a .m. in the church, 13370 Valleyheart Drive.Very Rev. Raymond J. Ross, C.M., rector of Our Lady Queen of the Angels Seminary, San Fernando, will give the homily.A native of County Wa-vterford, Ireland, Rev. Nevin came to the United States with his parents in 1912.REV. .J. J. NEVIN Note AnniversaryHaving had strong motivation towards the priesthood from childhood, young James Nevin entered St. Patrick's Seminary, Menlo Park, in September, 1921.Ordained in 1931On May 30. 1931, he attained his goal when he was ordained by the late Archbishop John J. Cantwell in St. Vibiana Cathedral, Los Angeles.Works in ScoutingRev. Nevin was appointed chaplain of the Los Angeles Area USO in July, 1943, and chaplain of the port of Los Angeles and director of the Catholic Maritime Club of San Pedro in August, 1944. He established the second Maritime Club in Wilmington.Rev. Kevin’s first pastorate was Our I^adv of Guadalupe Chu rch, Guadalupe, Cal., where hewas appointed in November. 1946. So 1971 also marks his 25th anniversary as a pastor.Long active in Scout work, he was named chaplain of Mission Boy Scout Council in 1947. He also organized a professional basketball team, the Phillips 66 Oilers, while at Guadalupe.Secures LegislationRev. Nevin’s next assignment. in May, 1949, was St. Sebastian Church. Santa Paula, where he built a school for children of migratory workers and established an active CYO program for youth.In June, 1954, he wastransferred to All Saints Church, El Sereno.Following a tragic bus accident, Rev. Nevin aided in passage of an assembly bill in April, 1958, placing all school buses — public and private alike — under supervision of the California Highway Patrol.He was assigned to St. Francis de Sales Church in November 1960, and has been active on behalfof parishioners, school children and the community for more than 10vears.WReception PlannedAmong his achievements here are the construction of an additional eight classroom school and the founding of a parish libra rv.Rev. Nevin is a member of the Sherman Oaks Chamber of Commerce, the Sherman Oaks Ki-w a n i s, Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus, Father O’Mahony KC Coun-%/cil and Catholic Press Council of Southern California. He is chaplain of the West and East Valley Curia, Legion of Mary; the Anchor Club for men ingovernment service andthe Anchorettes.A reception honoring Rev. Nevin will be given today at 8 p.m. in the school auditorium. All confirmands will speak on the theme “Our Jewish Holidays Today,”Students are Michele Carl in, Stuart Flamm, Debbie Gerstein, Mark Lo-cascio, Sandra Lockman, Arik Martin, Myra Matlin and Alan Schulkin.The charge and blessings to the confirmands will be given by the spiritual leader, Rabbi Morris D. Margolis. Cantor Morris Luffman will chant the musical portion. Bernard Robinson, board of educa-tion chairman, will present the confirmationcertificates. The Sisterhood will present the Bibles and prayer books to the confirmands.
