Aged Minister Recalls Start of Church HereRev. W. H. Kuykendall Tells of Organization of Emmanuel Baptst Church.The celebration of the 40th anniversary of Emmanuel Baptist church arouses many memories, said Rev. W. H. Kuykendall, 81, who has devoted his life to the ministry. Kuy-' lt;*kendall says he was living at Ryan when Rev. J. A. McCullough wrote him to come to Ardmore and organize a. church. He responded to the call and preached a series of sermons under a brush arbor in the block where .the Lamb store is now located on Fifth avenue southeast.wOn the 31st of May, 1896, the newchurch was organized and was knownas South Ardmore Baptist church. Dr. J. F. Young at that time was pastor of First Baptist church and he served as moderator at the organization meeting. It was not organized in opposition to any other church but was organized to meet a need in the community.Rev. J. A. McCullough was the first pastor of the church. Sam P. McCullough, Dodge dealer on Nortn Washington street, is a son of Rev. J. A. McCullough and Cari McCullough is another son. At about this time in the history of Ardmore there were two Baptist papers published here. Dr. J. F. Young and Rev. J. A. McCullough published the Baptist Beacon and Rev. W. H. Kuykendall published the Baptist Signal.Many of the men who have served as pastor of the church since its organization will be here for the exercises and it is believed the church has before it a new era of prosperity in financial and spiritual growth.
