Pettis, of Providence, Rhode Island, who served as captain of a company in the California Column during the Civil war.Captain Pettis learned through the Now Mexican Review of the unfortunate plight of C. H. Walker, of Alamogordo, an old veteran who recently was committed to the territorial Insane asylum at Las Vegas because of insanity. He pays the unfortunate man the following high tribute:“Walker was my first sergeant and a better soldier never shouldered a rifle; temperate in all things and always ready for duty, and I only regret that I was obliged to read the article.’'
