Local Rescue UnitRecovers Body OfDrowning VictimRobeson County Rescue Unit performed one of its major operationslt;*Tuesday night by recovering the body of a woman who had drowned in White Lake.The local squad waas -summoned at 9:10 p.m. and went directly to the lake, but had to withdraw from operations for a time be-cause of an impending storm. However, when they returned to the search, they found the body of Mrs. Willie Brown, wife of a Fayetteville rural policeman, in water nine feet deep. By using special underwater lights, the body was found and was recovered by use of special grappling hooks with extensions. The recovery was made about 1 a.m.The Cumberland county resc u e unit also was summoned but wasmnot present at the actual recovery. According to an incomplete report, Brown and his wife had gone to the lake in the afternoon and wereriding in a motorboat when Mrs.• . •Brown fell out. Brown reportedly almost drowned in an effort to rescue her and finally threw out a buoy to mark the spot of her sinking and went for help.The local unit entered the water at Goldston’s and went direct I y across the lake. The body was found about 100 feet from the Topped buoy which had drifted in the wind. Boats from the lake, the rescue unit boat and the personal boat of Dr, Dennis W. Biggs, Jr., were used in the operation.The Lumberton crew was made up of Chief Harry Taylor, Alton Carroll, Bobby Sessoms, Randy Stone, Dr. Biggs, and Deputy Sheriff Dixon Britt.Robeson County Rescue Unit #developed from the Civil Defense Auxiliary Police organization. Contributions from the county and municipalities have provided a truck, boat, and trailer, and equipment for virtually any kind of rescue work.
