There are some few people io Nashville wbo were, perhaps, acquainted with this remarkable character, as he spent two years of his life in Tennessee, and a great portion of that time in Nashville. Theoutlines of his career, as known to tbe writer of this, m»y prove not uninteresting to our readers. Ktugnbury was the aon or a wealthy merchant of Boston, and received a polished education at Harvard, graduating from that school when he was but eighteen years of age. Twice he left college and wandered in the wild lumber regions of Maine in search of adventure, of which he was marvelously tond, spending on each occasion four or five months away from civilisation, and giving h s friends no clue as to hit whereabouts.Arter leaving, school, the best opportunities for studying a profession were open to him, but his mind was set upon going to California, and, without the consent ot his family, he actually left home and went to the shores of the Pacific by the overland route Then he entered an expedi'ioo and spent some time in Arizona, wri.iog descriptive letters to tbe Alta California, which wt-re ex’ensively copied When the war broke out he came back to the K »st, and eulisted as a private in a Cincinnati regi ment, in which he servtd two years After be'ng mustered out he came to Nashville, and was a special detective cfiicer in theemployment of the Governnieutiu 1H6-1 Atthe battle of Franklin he was captured by the rebels, who carried him below tbe Tennessee, where he managtd to (.scape, and made his way to the Federal post at East* portComing down the river in February, 1866, he was blown up on the steamer Ecltptt, at Johusonville, hut was lucky iu escaping almost unharmed. He came to Nashville, and was found one morning insensible in in an alley, where be bad been shot and left for dead the very night of his arrival, by whom was never known.
