50 years agoDays of the ante helium South were recalled this week with the passing of Miss Sallie Branch, one of the few remaining negroes who served as slaves to white masters preceding the Civil War. She died here Tuesday at the home of Mr. aiid Mrs. Horace Clark, having reached the age of 89 years. After receiving her freedom when President Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation, she came to New Braunfels, where she married Sam Branch shortly thereafter.Bankhead applications for cotton exemption certificates are now ready for cotton producers to sign, according to County Agent George Khlinger. In order to gin cotton tax free, it is absolutely necessary that proper application for exemption certificates be executed as was done by each producer last year.New Braunfels was voted as the site for a Secretaries’ School of Instruction for this year at a joint convention of the Retail Merchants Association of Texas, the AssociatedRetail Credit Men of Texas, and the Texas Retail Credit Bureaus in San Antonio this week. Miss Mildred Sartor, secretary of the local Retail Merchants Association, was reelected secretary-treasurer of the Texas Retail Credit Bureaus, IncAn exhibit of work of local artists will be held at the Sophienburg Museum during the entire month of June under the sponsorship of the museum committee, according to an announcement made tins week. The exhibit w ill be open to all local artists and craftsmen, and prospective entrants may call Mrs. Marlin Faust or other members of the committee in charge.An additional quota for Comal County of 30 young men to be sent to Civilian Conservation Corps camps has been set by the Texas Relief Commission following President Roosevelt’s authorization to double the national juota, according to information received at the local relief office this week.
