Andrew Rush/NEWSANNIVERSARY DAY: On April 20, Bertram Fullwood was admitted to the Butler VA Medical Center. With his bride of 59 years, Mary-Louise, at his side, they celebrated their anniversary with a special lunch in their honor. The center’s staff decorated the dining area and acting director Terry Gerigk presented the couple with flowers.RETURN TRIP: This wasn’t thefirst time the Fullwoods celebrated a special occasion at the medical center. On April 20, 1945, Fullwood was on furlough from the Army to attend his father’s funeral. Because of time constraints, he and his girlfriend, the former MaryLouise Hall, decided to get married that day. As they left the Primitive Methodist Church, Fullwood suffered an acute appendicitis attack and was taken to the former Deshon Hospital (known today as the Butler VA Medical Center.) Once there, he had surgery and spent his honeymoon week at the hospital with his bride at his side.ABOUT THE FAMILY: The Audley Avenue couple are the parents of Marilyn Monko of Ohio and Bob Fullwood of New Castle. They have five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
