3-Sport State Prep Competition StartsCHAMPAIGN, III. (UP)—Some 900 schoolboy athletes squared off Friday in the annual three-ringed circus oMUinois spring sports.At stake were the state prep track, tennis and golf titles. Northern Illinois entries were favored in all three sports.Edwardsville high school, a member of the Southwestern conference, will be represented in five different track events. Orange and Black Tiger contestants include Mannie Jatkson (880-high jump), Pal Cassens (440), Sam Johnson (100 yard dash) and the mile relay team of Cassens, Howard (Cappy) Uuterbrink, Jackson and Governor Vaughn,The Bengal school will be represented in tennis competition, namely George Tormohlon and Will Radecke, who will compete in doubles play.Bloom Township of Chicago Heights, which qualified 11 men for the finals, was the team to beat for the track crown.The track title has gone to t team from Chicago or its suburbs in all but three years since 1925. But if Bloom should win, it would be the first crown for the Chicago Heights school.Others regarded as serious challengers for the 1956 laurels were Chicago Phillips, Aurora East, New Trier, Maine and Evanston.Attention will focus on the mile run, where DeKalb's Jim Bowers may threaten the state mark of 4:23.1 set in 1947. Bowers qualified for . the finals with a 4:23.4 in the district meet.Competing against Bowers willbe Hinsdale's Dave Hold, who turned in a 4:33.8 in the district; Jim Kastncr of Oak Park, who registered 4:35; Kankakee's Bob •Bagwell, at 4:35.9, and Fred Sandoval of East Moline. Bagwell finished second and Sandoval fourth in 1955,Another top event should be the 180-yard low hurdles. Entrants here Include Willie Martin of Chicago Phillips, who set the ‘stale record of 119,2 last year, and Maine's Hubert Hommer, who matched Martin's mark in-district competition.A close race loomed in the 100-yard dash, the leading qualifier being Bob Sehindcl of East Aurora who was timed in :09,7. A1 Tinsley of Wheaton and Lane Patterson ot Glenbard both registered :09.8. The record, set, by Phillips’ Jim Golliday in 1950, Is :08.6,Mike Smith of Frccpcyt set him-.self up as favorite in tho 880-yavd run on the basis of a 1:57.6 performance in the district, Just a second off the record. Dick Pond of Glenbard had the second best time in the district, at 1:59.Between 600 and 650 youths who qualified in district competition last week were entered in the, track and field finals. There were 200 more in the golf events, and 96 in tennis.In the track and field competition, preliminaries were scheduled Friday plus the finals in the broad jump and discus throw. Finals in other events will be run off Saturday.
