The White House Bakery bids fair to be one of the moat progressive establishments in the city. It Is run entirely by the Hlaban family, Anton Hlaben and wife and the two sons, John who is married, and the younger son, Stanley. Their family history. is an interesting one in itself. The elder Hlaban was born In Austria and started to learn the baking business at the age of seven years after being left alone by the death of both parentB. Working in different high class Austrian bakeries he soon developed a flair for fancy cake making and devoted a great deal of his time to perfecting cake “making” as an art.In 1907 the family decided to better their fortunes by moving to America. Coming directly to Milwaukee the elder Hlaban was engaged In the baking business for the i^ext fifteen years. At most of the bakeries where he worked he was cake foreman, among them the M. Carpenter Bakinc Co. The married son, John Hlaban. is an expert baker himself, having been engaged in that line for the last ten years. Aside from that he is quite a musician, having studied on different instruments for five years. He was a band corporal iu the 49th Infantry baud during the war, and since then led a band of bis own In Milwaukee, consisting of twenty-flve pieces. The band was mostly engaged In concert work for charitable purposes. After the war be also attended an ex-servico men's school for bakers.The Hlabans decided to mako their permanent homo In Sheboygan and last December bought the former Peter Kauer building on N. Eighth sirec*. A new front was put in and the entire building remodeled with i»6W equipment and ; machinery of ihe latest type in-1 stalled.An Interesting s’dellna of the' elder Hlaban’s is the making of \ wedding cakes. A picture of one of his creations made for an Austrian couple in Milwaukee shows him to be a master artist in that line. A cake he made for the M. Carpenter Baking Co. of Milwaukee required a week s time and sold for $120.Because of this particular ability of the Hlabans they expocfc to specialize In fancy baking it* addition to conducting a regular bake shop. The bakery opened at 5 o'clock, but two eager patrons were on hand at 4:30 a. m. and when the doors were thrown open quite a crowd had collected.
