YMCAstarts move from Court with building for swim poolAN ARTIST'S sketch of the proposed new YMCA building to be located on a new downtown site in Elyria.Wa i % -- ’By BARRY PENFOUNDThe expansion currently planned for Elyria YMCA. when it becomes reality, will be the first time facilities have been relocated from the Court Street site since the Y was established here in 1911.The expansion is to be financed by a $750,000 building fdod campaign now in progressTHE PROPOSED new building, which will house a swimming pool, lockers and shower rooms, will be the fourth expansion plan in 58 years for the Y which has had to grow in order to keep pace with Elyria.The new structure is to be in the downtown area, but a site has not yet been selected.In 1911, when 100 volunteers successfully completed a 1100.000 fund drive, the first Elyria YMCA building became a reality.A SWIMMING pool similar to this 45 x 75 foot unit is to be constructed in the new YMCA facility.The original building contained a complete program for men and boys, including a gymnasium, two handball courts, a 20 by 40 foot swimming pool, bowling alleys, youth and adult reading rooms, a cafeteria and 60 residence rooms.THE FACILITIES were more than adequate for Elyria which, at that time, had 15.000 residentsIn 1940 the boys locker and shower rooms and the mens residence shower rooms were remodeled at a cost of $22.-000. and in 1950 a successful $110,000 campaign brought more remodelling to the YMCA buildingThe exterior of the Y was renovated in 1956 as well as the remodeling of the first floor offices, but despite the fact that the population of Elyria has nearly tripled, it was still occupying the original building.The new YMCA building will provide the Y with the space to grow and will offer a family program for Elyria, according to Erwin A. Their only problem is that it is a long time until November, and the issue may grow stale if nothing new develops.SKEPTICS WILL point out that Gardner's work is not necessarily gospel since he admitted bending the truth to Herbert when the story first broke.State Auditor Roger Cloud reacted most swiftly when early reports began to filter in a week ago He immedi atelv ordered an audit of the loan program, produced the results in record time and directed all unanswered questions to Herbert.As Republican nominee for governor.
