Missco Leaders Back FromLobbying TrekWashingtonBy NORMA KERNS CN Staff WriterBLYTHEVILLE - Municipal officials are back from Washington, D. C., where they met with congressional leaders, staff, and Air Force representatives of the Pentagon.Making the trip were Mayor Joe Gude, Chamber of Commerce President John Sullins, Chamber Executive Vice President Jerry Bohanan, Co-chairmen of the Chamber’s Industrial Development Committee, Alvin “Bo” Huffman and William E. “Bill” Tomlinson, County Judge Joe Gurley, and Chamber members Harold Sudbury and John Logan.Said Bohanan, “A group of community representatives travel once each year to Washington, D.C., with the intention of informing Pentagon officials of the importance and economic impact of Blytheville Air Force Base to Mississippi County and Northeast Arkansas to inquire about future plans for BAFB, give a presentation on current needs of the base, and basically impress upon representatives of our receptivity and regard concerning the relationship between the community and Blytheville Air Force Base. ’ ’Stated Bohanan, “We communicated to officials that we welcomed additional missions — Rail Garrison or the B-l Bomber — to increase the stability and significance of the base.”Prior to the trip, said Bohanan, community officials communicated with BAFB officials on requests for military construction projects needed to enhance operation and mission capability.Continued Bohanan, “The presentation of the current needs of BAFB included military construction funding needs of the base including the building of new base housing or upgrading of old base housing.”Stated Bohanan, “Essentially, our trip involved lobbying for BAFB. We feel good about the visit and because of the frequency of our visits we have become acquainted with higher officials. They seemed to be very receptive to our visit. We feel an annual lobbying trip to Washington, D. C., is very important and beneficial for Mississippi County.Blytheville officials have made their annual pilgrimage to Washington D. C. C of C Executive Vice President Jerry Bohanan said “Essentially our trip involved lobbying for Blytheville Air Force Base. We feel an annual lobbying trip to Washington, D. C., is very important and beneficial for Mississippi County.”
