LilTTKZ L J VU lu vThe condemned man earlier admonished Sheriff Will Brantley, his boyhood schoolmate, not to be downhearted when the sheriff appeared with lowered head at his cell in the little Neshoba county jail to read the death warrant.“Hold your head ud.” White told Brantley. “Don’t be downhearted. I’m not mad at you of anybody.”The first white man to die in the chair in this state, White watched composedly as he was strapped in and the electrodes applied. The switch was thrown at 2:18 a.m. and he was pronounced dead five minutes later by Dr. J. H. Lee.Because of his boasts about Chapman, Philadelphia-born desperado and an intimate of White, the slayer was brought here from Jackson under guard. After the preliminary head-shaving and reading of the death warrant he chatted casually with officers until a priest arrived to administer the last sacraments of the Catholic church.Just before he left Jackson, where he was held for safe-keeping, White issued his first version of the slaying of Sam McCune, who the state charged was killed by White in an argument over division of vending machine profits.“It was not a cold-blooded murder, not even a murder,” White said, but “an accident.”He said McCune took a pistol from his (White’s) car as they went into the Blue Goose night club owned by White on the night of the shooting, September 24, 1940.
