While h# fiavpr had any special training in astronomy Mr. Evans always found time to appeaia his appetite for this science by devoting his leisure moments to the study of it. During the last few weeks Mr, Evans ha been in correspondence with Mary Proo-tor about the present visit of Halley'a comet. Mr. Evans said that he attended many of ihe lectures given by Mary Proctor’s father. At the time of the visit of Donati s comet in 1858, when Mr. Evana was living In California, he wrote to tha newspapers regarding his observations, believing that he was one of the first persons to detect the presence of the comet.Evans was born in Birmingham, England, and came to this country' whsn was 4 years old. His father was a Welshman. He has written several newspaper articles on astronomy, and he wrota the incidents of his life, extracts of which have been published In newspapers fromHe served all through the Mexican War with Stevenson’s CaliforniaExpedition. ».*Among those who saw Hailey’s coltoets in 1835 is Mrs. Mary Snell B\lsh, widow of the late George BuBh, now a Teaident of Lowvllle.
