He died April 30, 2009 at his home in Endicott at the age of 79 years, 10 months and 27 days.He married Jean Compton.He served in the Navy from 1950 to 1954 and served on the flagship El Dorado in the Korean War.He was a dairy farmer for more than 20 years and worked at Endicott Clay Products in the maintenance department until his retirement.He was preceded in death by his parents, son, Charles D. “Chuck” Jr., sisters, Opal Compton Check and Marjorie Compton Karst.Survivors include his wife; daughters, Charlene K. In October 1945, he was honorably discharged with the rank of staff sergeant and returned to Kansas.He was united in marriage to Evelyn Schaich on Dec. 31, 1945 and to this union three children were born. The young family moved to California where he worked in a lumber mill a few years, returning to Haddam, Kan., then moved to a farm north of Morrowville. In 1962, the family moved to Fairbury, where he worked at the JohnDeere dearlership and later at Boogaarts Super Market. After retiring in 1982, he became janitor of his church and bought and sold cattle with his son, Victor.He was Deacon of the First Christian Church.He was a member of the VFW and Elks Ltjdge No. 1203.His hobbies were playing cards, dancing and raising tomatoes.He was preceded in death by his wife, brdthers, Delmer and Harold, sisters, Anna Terpening and Evelyn Hinel.Survivors include his sons, Ronald and wife, Pam of Kearney and Victor of Fairbury; daughter, Linda Millerof Fairbury; sisters, Minnie Terpening and Gladys Novak, both of Haddam, Elda Adkins of Morrowville, HildaHauschel of Fairbury, Byrtilla ibarLichtenberger and husband, Rex of Beatrice, Martha Harris and husband, Harry of Crete; three grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.Services were held May 7 at the First Christian Church with the Rev.
