In the actual filling operations, the dredges discharged their loads of waler-soaked sand through long pipes at selected points along the canal. The dredging contractors were allowed to fill IS blocks at onetime. and they had the privilege of taking earth from any street'in the section to be filled for constructing dams and ditches to confine the sand and return the water to the canal.As the work progressed, the canal was filled in with sand up to the same grade as the surrounding laud. About 12.000.000 cubic yards of filling material were required to raise the grade to the specified level and nearly l5,utW,0UU cubic yards had to be . moved, including the canal, before the project was finished.: Actual work in the grade• raising operation begun in i December isui and continued until the completion of the initial I project in February 1911. In i subsequent years somewhat f smaller grade raising projects i were undertaken in western 1 sections of the city.The grade raising project was . financed by the city with some i! assistance from the state of e Texas.
