About the* s time of his graduation, he was appoint-, a ed principal of a school in Clark ( county, and held that position for sev- I eral years before returning to Xenia where he began that practice of the Jtlaw profession. Shortly afterward he ;t was elected city clerk of Xenia, holding that office for six years.He was appointed American consul to Santo Domingo by ex-President Harrison, and with his family moved iI i to that island- He held the oflice ! * for four years, until his retirement under the administration of the late President Cleveland. After his retirement he returned to Xenia, whereL I he engaged in the practice of law He was associated for several years with his son, Earl P. Maxwell iik practicing that profession.I Mr. Maxwell married Mary E. Cousins, of Xenia, in 1873, and she survives him, with two children. Earl F. Maxwell, and Mrs. M’nnie Maxwell Clemmens. wife of Ollie Clemmens. He was a life member of the board of (! trustees of Wilberforce University,;1 ! and for several years dean of the law j1 ! school of that university. He was |I a member of St- Johns A. M. E1church. He was an active member of the local lodge of colored Masons, and was for a number of years secretary of the grand lodge of Ohio. He was at one time affiliated with t j the blue lodge, the council, the chap-»| ter and the commandery at Xenia.j He leaves the following brothers j | and sisters, James P., George W. and ,i | Charles F- Maxwell; Mrs. Mattie iII Jones and Mrs. Marv Findlev.
