The first work he did there was making shoes for American soldiers, who were enlisting for the Mexican war. I(e left Philadelphia irt 1852 for Milwaukee, Wis.,where he lived four years on a farm, near that city. In 1856 he came to Missouri, lo-eating on the farm where he still resides, a period of sizty-two years. The farm of 160 acres, his first purchase, . was raw, unimproved land. He and his family began life here in a log cabin, and by the thrift, economy a/J good management of himself and his faithful wife they soon converted this into a beautiful farm home. Buying more land from time to time, he became the possessor of about 2000 acres.
