HftMIL I UN U MtHwViHOLYMPIC GAMES TRYOUT■Great Things Expected of Speedy Quarter MilerEXPECTS TO MAKE 1:57ph.whipiS;mRalph Hamilton, the speedy quartcr-mile runner of Dr. Hutchin’s track squad has announced his intention of entering, the Olympic games tryout, to be held at Chicago the first week in June. Hamilton is a freshman in the university and hence ineligible to compete with the varsity. He has been working all winter and thus far during the spring with the intention of running with the relay team at Philadelphia, but the team did not make the trip owing to lack of funds.Hamilton is in excellent condition now and believes that with a month's work, will be able to hold his own with the Olympic candidates. Dr. Hutchins, James Kasc, and other experienced track men who have seen him in action believe his opportunity is a good one. They say if he can win at Chicago he wilt get to make the trip to Stockholm, for the team will surely include a western as well as ail eastern man. If he makes the team it will mean that he is classed with Shepherd, Davenport and the other stars in the midd'c distance runs. He is confident that by the date of the tryout at Chicago he can negotiate his half mile in I :fi7 or I letter, which will be necessary.Hamilton hail considerable experience as a runner In-fore coming to the I diversity. He started at Manual Training High School in Indianapolis as a quartor-miler, and also won recognition as quarter and half-ntiler for the V. M. C. A., of which team he was captain last year. Besides this he ran on the Marion C Jub s championship relay four. Since coming to the university he has trained constantly for his events and has profited greatly by the efficient coaching of Dr. Hutchins.The victories of Phi'brook and Wasson at the annual games at the University of Pennsylvania last Saturday makes it certain that Notre Dame will be represented at Stockholm this summer. I’hil-brook is good for over forty-six feet in the shot and can hurl the discus beyond one hundred and forty feet. Wasson who never did under twenty-two feet in competition or practice in tin- broad jump will lie able to show a good leap in the Olympic trials at Chicago in June. Another sure member lt;1 the team will be Harry Hcbrn-r, the national back stroke champion in the swimming contests.
