The star* and stripes were floating from every mast* head and public building* in the city, in honor of a few of the survivors of on* of the most horrible maritime disaster* of the century.This was the tenth annual reunion ofthe survivors of the Sultana disaster, uiid about twenty-five of the boys in blue who were on the ill-fated boat on the morning' of the 27th nf April, 1SC5, gathered in this city to conduct the regular work of the National Sultana Survivors' tissocii t\ m.On the. 2rth of April, 1605, the steamer Sillt«na steamed out of Memphis on her way up the Mississippi, bearing her human freight of more than 2,000 sou Is* who for days and months had been cooped up in the prisons of the south.They were paroled prisoners fromCastle Thunder, Audersonville and other similar places. About nine miles above Memphis a detective boiler burst, blowing away a goodly portion of th* upper deck. The shattered hull then took Are and forced the unfortunate passengers over the side into the seething mass of drowning comrade* below. Non© knew how many were lost, but at best there were but a few hundred saved.
