Saturday at about 7 p.m., Massie arrived at the park and heard the cries of three girls from the Cog-shrouded lake. ;“I saw an overturned canoe and three girls in the water, and called to them that I would get help,” Massie explained. He then ran to his home, got a bpat and his neighbor Dave Webber and headed for the center of the lake. Massie said two of the girls had lifejackets and one did not and the cahoe had drifted about 100 yards frpm them. ;”1 think they were trying to swim for shore, but it was a long way -off and the water was very cold,” Massie explained. ;He and Webber pulled the girls into the boat and to safety and warmth and returned and got the canoe.“They were very cold and verythankful,” he noted, adding that .he’ doubted they could have made it without help. We explained that Lake Gogebic can be a very dangerous place and no one should canoe any further than 50 feet from shore.“I have lived on that lake for 30 years and it is so unpredictable. You can go fishing on a calm lake, and 30 minutes later you're in trouble,” he added.Since Saturday, Massie has had a lot of time to think about the events of that night.“I still don’t know why I decided to go jogging in the fog. I guess it wasn’t their time to die,” he concluded..
